25th March update

Council Activity

Well, here we are in Spring, though you'd never believe that - fingers crossed for some better weather.  This week sees a busier week in council with a busy looking Planning Committee on Tuesday (though no items in Church Gresley Ward), an Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting on Wednesday and Full Council on Thursday.  There are also meetings of the Licensing and Appeals Sub-Committee and the Heritage Grants Sub Committee on Tuesday and Thursday.

A link to the meetings can be found below:

Weekly update 17/3/12

Last week saw a relatively short Housing & Community Services Meeting.  The main item on the agenda was to approve the grants selected for the Community Partnership team.  The council continues to support voluntary organisations as the benefit of these organisations is noted by the council, particularly as many underpin good work in the local community.

The week ahead has 2 meetings on Thursday. At 10am is the flood liaison committee, which does not affect Gresley to any great extent.  More importantly is the Finance & Management Committee at 6pm.  The link is below:

Feedback on Last Week & Surgery and Look ahead

Environment & Development Services Committee - 7th March

Last week, at Environment & Development Services Committee there were 2 main items.  The first being a report on Swadlincote Town Centre  following the award of a grant from "Our Town First".

This will concentrate on ideas to further improve the town centre in Swadlincote and attract more businesses.  It also noted the idea to brand Swadlincote as the market Town of the National Forest.  One of the themes was to provide an app for improving the availability of car parking spaces.  The question was also asked about promoting Swadlincote through local public transport companies.

The second report was to note the updated Environmental Health Enforcement Policy which was duly approved.

Surgery Feedback & General News

Items raised at our surgery included the state of the wall on Castle Road, a pathway issue to the Recreation Ground on Station Street, some damaged railings on Spring Street and some parking issues.

All of the above have been forwarded and we are awaiting a response where necessary.

We would also like to remind people that we can discuss things in confidence as people have done at our surgeries.

Aside from our councillor based work we heard today that our local vicar David Perrett was taken ill today, though is making good progress. We wish David a quick recovery and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time.

Week Commencing 11th March

Meetings this week include the Licensing and Appeals sub committee and also Housing and Community Services - see agenda link below.

2020 Vision in the National Forest.

The following exhibition will be on the Delph in Swadlincote from 18th March to 7th April.  It looks well worth a visit and it is free.

Latest Events (6th March)

After a brief break from the Blog, please see summary of recent events, past and present:

Full Council - Monday 4th March

Full Council was dominated by the setting of the council tax for the coming year.  At the end of the debate, a 3rd consecutive freeze was voted through by the current administration in line with the current Government's advice.

As councillors we were put in a difficult position as the medium term financial plan advises an annual rise of 2.5% and the Overview and Scrutiny Committee voted in favour of a 1.9% rise.  However, on the night, some of those who voted for a 1.9% rise had decided to change their minds.  Unable to ascertain the further information that had come to light since the original vote, this made our decision more difficult.

We don't want to have to increase council tax but we recognise that there could be problems in the future if it is not increased.  Compared to VAT, council rent increases and the bedroom tax, the difference of around 3p per week is small, though we are well aware that it is still an increase.

Our key priority is that residents get value for money through good services and we do not want to see these cut in anyway.

We will keep a firm watching brief.

On a lighter note we were treated to a lesson in economics by a senior member of the opposition which was entertaining, though very blinkered!

Environment & Development Services Committee - 7th March
